The Road Not Taken — Robert Frost (1874-1963)
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference”
In 2025, Jochi Muñoz @jochimunoz revisits his performance “Como el aleteo de una mariposa” — “Like the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings” — originally created 10 years ago in his hometown, Santo Domingo, now beautifully reimagined for VIVA! Art Action in Montreal.
Carrying a book, Jochi walked through the streets and parks toward L’Union Française de Montréal, inviting passersby to engage in a quiet, poetic ritual of choice. Each page offered two photographs: one of his maternal great-grandfather — who emigrated from Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic in the late 19th century — and one of Jochi himself, from his first passport. On the back: Frost’s The Road Not Taken, to be read in English or French. After the reading, Jochi gently tore out the page, folded it into an origami butterfly, and handed it to the reader — a delicate and powerful gesture marking the echo of decisions, across time and generations.
On October 11, I had the chance to witness this deeply moving performance. The poem stayed with me… but so did the sight of Jochi’s hands — like butterfly wings — folding memory into form. Drawing from my research on kinesthetic empathy, I experienced the subtle power of this gesture not only visually, but somatically — as if my own body echoed the movements in the action. The butterfly’s flutter still resonates on my skin — a somatic and poetic reminder that every crossroads carries the potential for transformation.
Later that day, we read the poem out loud in Spanish, as a trio (with Christine Brault @hilorojo_cris and Jochi). A shared moment of voice, language, and presence.
